How hard is it to make a living as an Olympic-sport athlete?

PALM DESERT, June 30, 2017 – One of the issues most prominent in Hungarian swim star Katinka Hosszu’s screed against FINA, the aquatics governing body, is that unless you’re one of the top five athletes in your event, you can’t make a living at your sport.

Is that really right? We did some checking and show the payouts for “regular season” tournaments and World Cups in eight sports, including athletics, swimming and gymnastics. It isn’t pretty, but you can get all the details in our Lane One commentary, plus:
