1. How did The Sports Examiner come about?

The Sports Examiner was inspired by our great respect for the irrepressible Jim Healy (1923-94), whose 15-minute sports news show was "appointment listening" in Los Angeles radio from Monday through Friday at 5:30 p.m. from the 1960s through the mid-1990s.

Healy combined news, opinions and rumors into a style which incorporated hundreds of sound bites into a continuing dialogue that usually made Healy the straight man for his cast of sound-bite characters that included Howard Cosell, Tommy Lasorda and many, many others. His show, originally designed to last 15 minutes nightly usually passed 30 minutes on most days, requiring him to alert his listeners to the about-to-beep "dreaded six o'clock tone." The program reached its zenith during his 1972-82 stint at KLAC-AM and from 1984-94 at KMPC-AM, both in Los Angeles, California.

Honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991, Healy's last show was on May 1, 1994 after which KMPC switched to a talk-radio format. Already ill at that time, he died on July 22, 1994. He was posthumously inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1997.
